Get Organized: Room by Room

It sounds simple but can be a challenge for most to get organized. I am big on taking one room at a time and making it fun. The first step to getting organized is cleaning each physical environment in your home and ridding yourself of items you no longer need or use. To help you get started, we have outlined some simple steps to begin tackling room by room.

The Bedroom

  • Closet: Remove everything from your closet and sort items into piles: donate, discard or keep.
  • Select an organizational method that aligns with your hanging style—color, clothing type, season.
  • Maintain organization: determine if you will organize monthly, quarterly, seasonally or twice a year. This will make it less of a chore and more enjoyable.

The Clothing Drawer

To create an organized space in your drawer, you can use a fold-and-roll technique or dividers to create a precise look.

The Bathroom

An organized bathroom can make your morning and evening routines inviting.

  • The Shower: Invest in organizers if you do not have built in shelves to neatly store body wash and other smell good items.
  • Use shelving units to store organizers and place folded towels.
  • Use drawer dividers to separate toothbrushes, deodorant, etc.

The Kitchen

With an organized kitchen you will feel less stressed when you’re prepping meals and entertaining. Tackle the cupboards, pantry and refrigerator with these simple solutions.

Cupboards

  • Clean out the cupboards with soap and water or use Clorox wipes.
  • Place dishes you use frequently in accessible cabinets and store fragile items higher up.
  • Clear your countertop by storing appliances to alleviate clutter.

Pantry

  • Store herbs and spices in a separate cabinet or invest in a spice drawer.
  • Keep canned foods and nonperishable items at the bottom.
  • Keep cereals and breakfast items at the top.

Fridge

  • Take everything out of the fridge and clean it out.
  • Separate fruits and vegetables–place in separate compartments.
  • Keep prepped food in clear containers so you can easily see what’s inside.

The Living Room

  • Keep remote controllers on the TV stand, tuck away in a storage bin or neatly display in a side drawer table
  • Use a closed cabinet with organizers to store items such as throw pillows and blankets.
